He unveiled it at the 2017 TED Conference and it’s nothing short of amazing. He wants to create sustainable and livable cities in which all people can thrive. The layout would be organized with pedestrians and bikers in mind – in an effort to keep them safe from cars – which will use sensors and artificial intelligence software to help them navigate through traffic on their own. Traffic lights will also use AI software so they can optimize traffic flow while eliminating congestion. All vehicles will also be electric or zero-emission by 2030 with plans underway for any new vehicle sold to be zero-emission as well by 2040.
The self-driving cars that would populate these futuristic cities would be used on a platform called Tesla Network. The plan is to offer an on-demand driverless taxi service allowing people who currently own Tesla vehicles to use their car as an autonomous taxi when they aren’t using it. This will allow them to generate revenue from their vehicle while not driving it and give people in places where public transit is limited access to cheap or free rides. Elon believes that his vision of smart cities can create safer, greener and more economically prosperous places for everyone. The only question now is when we’ll see one of these smart cities in real life.
In addition to Tesla, Elon is also CEO of SpaceX – his other futuristic company – and he’s already trying out some of these smart city concepts there. In June 2017 he launched Project Hyperloop at a test track in Texas as part of SpaceX’s annual International Space Station Research and Development Conference. The goal is to create high-speed transportation that can get people from San Francisco to Los Angeles in just 30 minutes with pods travelling through low-pressure tubes at speeds over 700 mph. The project may seem like something out of science fiction right now but could one day be the preferred way of getting around if smart cities catch on in cities worldwide.
How long before we see them?
We could see the first of these cities as early as 2025, according to Musk. That may seem like a long way off, but given that he founded SpaceX in 2002 and Tesla in 2003, and both companies are now leaders in their respective industries, it would be foolish to bet against him. When asked about the timeline for these cities, Musk said: I’m pretty confident that the first city will be operational in 10 years or less. So it looks like we have about a decade to get ready for the world’s first smart city.
Because of that accelerated timeline, it’s important that we prepare ourselves now so that when they come into being we’re ready. That doesn’t just mean reading up on who he is and what his vision is; as with any major change in technology or society, there are bound to be unforeseen issues and complications that could affect us all. When making preparations for something like these smart cities though, it may prove helpful to look at how they will solve their problems and plan accordingly. For example: In his Master Plan Part Deux published by Tesla earlier in 2017, Musk outlined many of his ideas for how he thinks one of these cities should be structured.
What will life be like?: Although it may seem like these cities are some ways off yet, there’s still plenty of time to get an idea of what they could look like. The first step would be looking at what we already have in place that could be similar or improved upon. Japan has been building smart cities on artificial islands since 2003, Dubai has put intelligent highways in place and there are even large-scale smart city projects taking place in China and India too. These are just four examples from around Asia though – not every country will embrace them in a similar way.

In this way, residents can easily find the best route to any destination through an interactive map and make connections with others who share similar interests. All without lifting a finger or driving themselves around for hours!
