This can’t be all that Musk has up his sleeve. I have a feeling there is more to come. Most of what he says are hints at something much bigger down the road. For example, here is an excerpt from a recent Quora answer he gave: The ultimate goal of Tesla Motors (and The Boring Company) is to help expedite humanity’s move from a mine-and-burn hydrocarbon economy towards a solar electric economy, which is fundamentally more efficient and sustainable. I’m assuming that statement means Musk plans on changing more than just automobiles in his efforts. Perhaps one day even car factories will be completely automated?
Now, I know what you’re thinking. This is all just crazy talk, right? It can’t possibly be that easy to purchase a Tesla! But don’t worry, I’ve already asked Musk if it will be as easy as he says: Musk: Yes it will — Elon Musk, Perhaps we should have believed him sooner? Of course, none of us can know exactly how fast electric cars and self-driving bots will become mainstream, but what we do know is they are rapidly becoming reality. Not too long ago most people thought flying cars were nothing more than a sci-fi fantasy—and now look at us.
Musk has been very outspoken in his support of AI and has said that he believes AI is humanity’s best chance at becoming a multi-planetary species. AI is much more than just beating humans at chess, he once said. It will be beating humans at most cognitive tasks. I think it is the biggest risk we face as a civilization. Maybe if we didn’t fear robots would take over one day, we’d invest more in them? Speaking of which: Musk still expects non-Tesla self-driving cars to make up 25% of vehicles on U.S. roads by 2022—even with Tesla leading innovation efforts.
And Musk has hinted that Tesla is working on a larger and more affordable car in response to competition from established companies such as GM, Ford, Honda, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Those firms are offering electric vehicles priced between $30,000 and $45,000 while Tesla currently has just one sedan available—the Model S—that starts at $68,000. The company recently launched an all-electric SUV called Model X that starts at $82,500. So what would a cheaper and bigger Tesla look like? My guess is it will look similar to a VW van since Musk isn’t shy about his admiration of those classic machines.

because a robot can chauffeur us around while we catch up on Netflix. And we don’t need a car, because an app can drop one at our front door when we order it. So even if you’re not a big fan of Elon Musk and his companies, it’s important to understand what they are up to because it will impact your business. With competitors like Apple, Alphabet, and Uber making moves in autonomous technology as well, there is no doubt that we will be seeing more self-driving cars on our roads in the very near future. Will Tesla still be able to maintain its lead? Will established auto manufacturers beat them at their own game? And yet it still managed a profit.
While Tesla currently seems to have a leg up on its competition, that’s not to say that it has already claimed victory. Whether you love or hate Tesla for its business practices, you can be sure that there will be plenty of attention around Musk and his company in the coming years—and I wouldn’t want to miss out on investing in a game-changing company like that!
