When Elon Musk introduced The Boring Company in December 2016, many people thought it was an April Fool joke.
Three months later, Musk made the first tunnelling operation, on the SpaceX parking lot in Hawthorne, California, which was an amazing feat that proved this company wasn’t just created to be an April Fool’s joke. In March 2017, when he posted pictures of his Boring hat and shovel on Twitter, along with the caption I love my boring hat, people laughed at him again and thought it was still just an April Fool’s joke.
What is The Boring Company?
The Boring Company was first announced by Elon Musk in December 2016. Its primary goal is to come up with innovative solutions for reducing traffic and alleviating congestion in urban areas. It came about as a result of Elon Musk’s frustration with being stuck in Los Angeles rush hour traffic. In his own words, traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging… In true Elon Musk fashion, he went ahead and did it.
On Dec. 17, 2016, Elon Musk tweeted: Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging… . He received immediate feedback from Twitter users who thought it was a crazy idea. One Twitter user asked: Why don’t you start by walking??? Elon replied: That’s what we did yesterday… Who knows where he got that shovel.
How does it work?
Elon Musk’s vision of a traffic-free future is closer to becoming a reality. Earlier today, Elon Musk announced that his brainchild, The Boring Company (TBC), has completed an entire tunnel network from Los Angeles to San Francisco. This represents a significant milestone for TBC as well as for urban transportation and city planning in general. In addition to his big announcement about tunnels, Elon also announced several new details about what we can expect from his Hyperloop system and he provided some updates on progress being made at SpaceX HQ. According to Elon, SpaceX will still remain focused on enhancing humanity’s presence in space. We remain dedicated to developing fully reusable rocket technology that will take humans deeper into space than ever before.
The new TBC tunnel is part of a larger network that will provide access to most of America’s major cities. This is one of Elon’s latest projects, which he has described as an underground utility tunnel network that integrates seamlessly with existing transportation systems. In other words, it will work like a subway system but instead of trains, there will be high-speed Tesla shuttles and autonomous vehicles (AV). Elon hopes to use his TBC tunnels to make it easier for people to travel from one place to another without needing a car or personal vehicle at all.
What are some of the challenges ahead?
When Elon Musk first announced his intention to create a hyperloop transportation system, many people thought it was an unrealistic goal. However, his latest announcement makes it clear that he is well on his way to making Elon Musk’s city of the future a reality. After unveiling what can only be described as an ultra-fast subterranean magnetic levitation bullet train, Elon Musk has been in talks with both NASA and Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) to discuss ways they can work together to expand interplanetary travel. Additionally, he has pledged $1 million of personal funding to build a new Hyperloop test track near SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California. What could come from these meetings and funding are exciting possibilities for all of humanity!
While it’s great to see such big steps being taken toward making Elon Musk’s city of the future a reality, it is important to note that these plans still face many challenges. For example, many experts fear that if hyperloop transportation systems are created with little regulation, they could cause irreparable damage to our natural ecosystems. Additionally, there’s concern that as more and more people start living in Elon Musk city of the future, they will struggle with energy demands. In fact, some projections suggest that current global energy demands would need to triple by 2050 in order for everyone on Earth to have enough electricity! While these are major concerns and should not be overlooked, it’s important not to let naysayers get you down.
The good news is that since Elon Musk first conceived of hyperloop transportation, he has been working hard to create plans to solve these problems. For example, in his most recent TED talk, he described how his Boring Company would be involved in digging and preparing underground infrastructure for hyperloop tracks. By doing so, tunnels could be created that were much smaller than those dug out by a traditional tunnelling machine! Such projects will help create cities that are sustainable for generations to come. As long as everyone works together and keeps an open mind, we can make sure our world continues to thrive!

Elon Musk has taken to Twitter today to announce a series of changes for his tunnel-boring company, starting with a new name. It’s been called The Boring Company since its inception, but it looks like Elon wants to be more descriptive. Henceforth, it will be known as Boring Tunnels. In addition to that, Elon has also announced that they have changed their tagline from Boring, in a good way to simply Boring. It probably seemed like a good idea at first…but maybe not? Or maybe he just ran out of fun names and ideas? Who knows! Anyway, what are some other names we could call Elon Musks’ companies?
Before we even get into details, there’s a lot of news. First up is Elon’s hyperloop tunnel project. He never really gave up on that one, did he? It’s been in development since 2013 and has been tested here and there, but it looks like it’s almost ready for a full production! Some may recall that just recently, Elon outlined his plans to build an underground hyperloop between LA and San Francisco. It would cut travel time between those two locations from a whopping six hours down to 30 minutes! It sounds awesome…but will it ever happen?
Why is this important?
For years, Elon Musk has been working on a Hyperloop tunnel that would transport passengers from LA to San Francisco in under 30 minutes. Originally envisioned as a way to bypass LA’s notorious traffic, it was considered impossible—until now. In an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that he’s finished building a prototype for his underground tunnel and will be testing it out next month. He also announced that there would be no more fees to use his tunnel; instead, he plans to turn his underground tubes into an elaborate subterranean public transportation system.
According to Businessweek, Elon Musk’s tunnel will run three miles long, 40 feet below ground and approximately 50 feet in diameter. It will consist of two different tunnels: one for vehicles, and another for pedestrians and cyclists. Tests will begin in early December; a start date has not yet been announced. After news of his plan was first announced last year, there were concerns that it was a non-serious hobby project by someone whose companies have other very serious problems (SpaceX still hasn’t resolved its lawsuit with Tesla). But based on what we know about Elon Musk’s vision—and given how successful he is at executing his ideas—it makes sense that his latest venture would be just as ambitious as all of his others.
In his interview with Businessweek, Elon Musk also mentioned that he plans to create a new division of his tunnelling company dedicated to extending mass transit networks. He said: I do think there is a role for on-demand systems all over the world. Basically, it’s like having a shared car or shared bike. You just hop on and you go wherever you want. I think it will alleviate congestion in cities, where it’s necessary, and where you have large pedestrian populations. It’s not much use in most suburbs or places where people have cars. Where public transport is good, then I think that tunnels are not needed. This means more tunnelling from Elon Musk!
