The life and times of Elon Musk are filled with intense highs and tragic lows—you’ve heard the amazing stories, but did you know there were also some moments that tested the very limits of human endurance?
In this article, I’ll walk you through the untold story of Elon Musk and show you what life is like for this groundbreaking inventor and entrepreneur.
Childhood & Early Influences
Elon was born on the 28th of June, 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa. He is the son of an engineer father and a writer mother. As a child, he had as much access to books as his family could afford. At around the age of eight, Elon taught himself computer programming from a school book called BASIC Computer Games. When he was 12 years old, his parents divorced for reasons unknown to the public (he has refused to disclose them). Despite this difficult time in his life, he would go on to attend Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where he majored in economics.
The summer before college started was one he said really shaped him into the person he is today. It was because during that summer he had spent months contemplating the meaning of life while travelling alone through Australia and New Zealand. During the trip, he worked odd jobs like picking apples or cutting sugar cane because they paid well but didn’t require any formal education past high school.
Adulthood, Business, & Successes
Elon Musk is an American business magnate, investor, engineer, inventor, and co-founder of Tesla Inc. As of November 2022, he has a net worth of 250.5 billion USD. His goals are lofty by any standards; he wants to reduce global warming through sustainable energy production in all sectors: electricity generation, transportation fuels production and consumption as well as industrial processes. He wants to reduce the risk of human extinction by building a human colony on Mars. If anyone can do it, it’s Elon!
At the age of 10, he developed an interest in computing with the Commodore VIC-20. At 17 he moved to Canada to continue his studies where at University in 1992 he earned degrees in economics and physics. He started several companies before the age of 30 including Zip2 which eventually sold for over $300 million dollars. He founded SpaceX, which aims to decrease the cost of space travel so that humans can live on other planets. He also founded Tesla Motors and SolarCity. These have proven very successful too. The Model S alone has grossed more than $3 billion in sales worldwide and had the best customer satisfaction ratings of any car ever released in the US market according to Consumer Reports surveys.
In 2001 he became a multimillionaire after PayPal went public and merged with eBay’s PayPal segment, but soon thereafter suffered the bankruptcy filing in 2002 due to corporate financial problems brought about largely because then CEO Peter Thiel refused to take necessary measures against continuing massive fraud by users. However, this didn’t stop him! After the company sold to eBay he used the money received to launch SpaceX and Tesla. Both these ventures were among the largest successes of their kind, both in economic terms and engineering terms.
The success of both Space X and Tesla has led many people outside Silicon Valley venture capital firms to say that Elon Musk may be one of the most important figures behind the progress made by America since World War II. Tesla entered into an agreement with Panasonic Corporation in 2014 for batteries after learning that its exclusive supplier, Japan’s Panasonic Corporation would not be able to meet its demand. The company later signed a similar agreement with Japan’s Nissan Motor Company Ltd. In 2015, they finally reached an agreement with China Mobile Ltd. and China Unicom Ltd.
Friends & Family
Elon’s family is just as involved in his success as he is. In 1999, at the height of the Internet boom, Elon first made an investment that would forever shape his and his family’s future. The company was Zip2, which developed and sold a Web site called Global Directory (later renamed Zipper). A year later, he dropped out of Stanford to take over the CEO position. He raised $12 million from friends and family to buy out co-founder Ron Conway and other investors. They gave me money because they believed in me, said Musk. And I couldn’t believe how quickly it turned into all this. The story of Elon Musk–the world’s richest entrepreneur under 40 with a net worth greater than Amazon founder Jeff Bezos–is one that has captivated the imaginations of entrepreneurs everywhere. His life story has become the subject of numerous biographies, documentaries, articles and books.
From the outset, it seemed as though Elon had decided on his path in life. Having graduated from Pretoria Boys High in South Africa, a brilliant 17-year-old began studying physics at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania. Soon after he was accepted into Stanford University, where he acquired a bachelor’s degree in business and physics before earning an M.S. in applied materials science. This seeming trajectory changed dramatically, however—not once but twice—with the births of his first two children within two years of each other (three children later and counting). There are two fundamental rules when it comes to work and family: Don’t do it all yourself — you’ll burn out quickly — and don’t miss out on your kids’ early years because you’re working too hard, says Musk.
Today’s Elon Musk
The life and times of a businessman, innovator, entrepreneur, and inventor. Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk created the first successful mainstream electric car as well as helped to put a decent dent in the universe by commercializing space exploration. There are two sides to every story. The bad news is that not everyone can be or become an Elon Musk success story essay person. Luckily for those of us who aspire to such heights, the good news is that it doesn’t take an Elon-level effort to improve our lives. We don’t have to give up on our dreams or settle for less because we don’t happen to be blessed with extraordinary intellect or determination. Let’s look at how we might employ some simple strategies–within the ordinary means available to us–to create better lives today.
First off, we could learn to love the life we have now instead of constantly feeling like something is missing. Then again, it’s also possible that what we think will make us happy (marriage, children) won’t live up to expectations. And even if it does work out the way we hope, there will still come a time when you’ll want more from your spouse than he or she can provide or want more from your children than they’re able to give. But perhaps if you allow yourself the possibility of being satisfied with where you are right now–and do so without reservation–you’ll feel contentment and happiness in a way you never imagined possible!
Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur known for being the co-founder of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, had humble beginnings. Born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1971 to a father who was an engineer and a mother who is a model, Elon proved to be an extremely intelligent child that attended college at the University of Pennsylvania where he earned degrees in both physics and economics. After earning his degree he came back to Canada and moved to Silicon Valley where he launched what would become PayPal. By 2008 he had sold PayPal for $1.5 billion which led him on the journey of founding Tesla Motors which sold shares valued at $200 million just two months after they went public.
During his youth, the young entrepreneur was always very interested in computers. In fact, he had a computer programming tutor when he was 11 years old and started developing his own software at 12 years old with some friends. He also wrote code for a video game that he hoped to sell to local stores so they could be sold on floppy disks! The main reason why Musk decided to create PayPal came from the need to send money electronically across international borders. Shortly after creating PayPal, however, eBay bought the company for $1.5 billion which led him down a new path towards founding Tesla Motors in 2003.
