How much would you pay to solve one of your biggest problems? Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, may be prepared to pay billions of dollars to fix one big issue in his life—and he’s willing to offer the same service to others who are willing to pay up as well.
Musk and his new startup, Neuralink, are working on creating a neural network that will eventually allow human brains to communicate directly with machines, allowing us to supercharge our own cognitive abilities.
What we know about Elon Musk’s involvement with Neuralink
Recently, Elon Musk invested in a new company called Neuralink. They are looking to create an interface between the human brain and computers. As of right now, we don’t know what his motivation is but he’s not the only one that is interested in this company. I’m going to explain some reasons why people think his reasons are different from what they seem! The primary function of Neuralink is to create a connection between machines and the human brain. What if Elon has seen how easy it is for children growing up with smartphones and tablets to be consumed by screens? He could want to keep them focused on real-world challenges such as learning math, socializing with friends or simply being outside instead of inside glued to their screens.
What about being diagnosed with a degenerative disease? For someone like Elon who has said many times he doesn’t want to die, he could want to be able to connect his brain to computers so that when he inevitably does develop Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or another degenerative disease and can no longer function physically, his mind can still continue working in virtual space. For all, we know it may already be too late for him. He is 46 years old and according to The Guardian, almost half of British adults aged between 45-50 have either type 2 diabetes or are pre-diabetic. It could be that as much as he wants people not to suffer from these diseases, he needs an alternate way out of them himself.
What the competitor is doing that maybe he isn’t…
In a letter to President Trump, CEO Andy Haldane said that he felt it was inappropriately opportunistic for Mr Musk to argue that this is an appropriate time for Tesla to request the rescission of agreements with the Security and Exchange Commission which require the company to comply with reporting obligations. This proves that Tesla does not have as much formality in their systems and may make Mr Musk apprehensive about what it would mean for Tesla’s future if he were to leave the company. What is the main purpose of Neuralink? To treat certain conditions or disorders where a person is unable to communicate with traditional therapy or medicines. Like ALS, Brain Aneurysms, Strokes, Multiple Sclerosis, and Amputations.
The main purpose of Mr Musk’s company, Neuralink, is to directly interface computers with your brain, eliminating typing and other forms of communication. What is scarier is that there are competitors who are using similar methods to what Mr Musk is using for his goals, proving that he may want to make sure he has a certain standard in place before putting himself in charge of so many projects at once.
What happens if something happens to him? – Third Paragraph: In July 2017 during an interview on Joe Rogan’s podcast Mr Rogan discussed topics ranging from Electric Shocks that can simulate peak experiences or even death all while under anaesthesia during surgery due to neural implants and how eventually it will be possible to upload yourself onto a computer while you’re still alive.
How Does This Affect Our Industry?
A good business owner understands that in order to grow, he or she must consider the competition. A recent announcement by well-known innovator Elon Musk appears to confirm this notion. Neuralink, a company Musk founded with two other tech professionals, has announced plans to launch an implantable brain-computer interface. The announcement comes as something of a surprise considering how ambitious and expensive such an endeavour would be – not to mention the fact that companies like Google, Facebook and others are developing similar technologies. Still, according to Eric Berger at Ars Technica who is covering the story of this breaking technology, there is a big difference between what these competing technologies offer their users and how they operate.
Berger explains that Facebook’s research department is exploring a brain-computer interface that would let people type 100 words per minute straight from their brains, with roughly five times more accuracy than you get from a typical speech-to-text system. However, to hear Berger explain it, what these companies are developing and what Elon Musk wants to create at Neuralink are completely different. What we’re really talking about here is a technology that’s in its infancy, said Berger when speaking of competing technologies. [It has] a long way to go. Berger goes on to describe how unique a company like Facebook or Google might be as compared to Elon Musk’s ambitions at Neuralink.
Where do we go from here?
Until the company releases more information, we don’t know what its main goal is or how they plan to beat other competitors. One question that has been raised is whether they’re looking to become a competitor of Facebook and Google in advertising data. Perhaps they have already created a system better than theirs? We’ll need to wait for more information to find out!
It’s also possible that they’re looking to partner with other technology companies and use their systems for advertising data. That way, instead of competing with Google and Facebook, they can have a mutually beneficial partnership. For now, we’ll just have to wait for more information!

Elon Musk is quoted as saying I don’t want to talk too much about Tesla or SpaceX because I’ll go mad and yet we are still constantly inundated with updates from these companies. The same goes for AI, where he has invested in a competitor to his own company. So why is he making this commitment? As Professor Geer observes, Musk knows what any large company does not want to know: computers have made machines capable of replacing humans. What is the main purpose of Neuralink? The mission behind it is mainly the prevention of an AI takeover – the thing that Mr Musk fears the most.
